How would you like to control your own dream? You know, and feel like the scriptwriter, director and star on your own movie, play on a limitless genre, with the best special effects, unconventional storyline and what not?

We have all desired to control our own dreams, and while many would find achieving it an impossible dream so to speak, a few have actually mastered it. In fact, there is a whole new discipline called Lucid Dreaming.

What is Lucid Dreaming?

Lucid dreaming is that special type of dreaming (yes you might say that Inception is right below Lucid Dreaming when you put them on a list) when the dreamer (that will be you) is aware that he is on a dream. And what could happen if you’re aware that you’re inside a dream? Answer: Anything you can dream of (pun intended).

The first key to controlling your dream is to know that you’re in a dream. We can call this stage as entering the lucid (dream) stage.

Lucid Dreaming

How to know if you’re on a dream:

1. There are a few proven techniques that allow you to determine if you are inside a dream. Find or check for any of the following:

  • a. Gravity – Test gravity. Trying throwing an object up in the air, if it doesn’t fall at is should have, if it flies straight out in the sky chances are you’re dreaming. If you’ve seen the movie Inception chances are you have a clear picture of a messed up gravity (and other laws of physics). Just don’t try jumping off a building or something; you might never come back if you’re not dreaming. While you’re at it, here are movies with amazing dream scenes.
  • b. Clock – clocks, not the analog ones somehow don’t work in the right way when dreaming. For example, they skip time, when you look at it can say 7:00 PM when another look would tell you it is 10:00 AM, see the discrepancy here? It turned out time is twisted in our dreams. This explains why we sometimes feel like it’s been a few days on our dreams when in reality the dream only lasted a few minutes. Another idea here is in dreams, time can sometimes flow backwards – talk about messing time (and space) continuum there. So once dreaming, try to find a clock, if it moves weird, you are in a dream.
  • c. Textbook – books with long texts, not scroll times of photobooks are often twisted too when inside a dream. Check the text on a book that you find, if it doesn’t make sense, and we’re talking about not just wrong grammar, but sentences that just doesn’t make sense (in any possible universe) chances are you’re in a dream.
  • d. Light switch – For some reason light switches don’t work on a dream. We’re talking about big light bulbs, lamps etc. Try to find one and flip it quickly, if it didn’t work chances are you’re dreaming (or it’s just broken).
  • e. Hand – Your very own hands can indicate whether you’re on a dream or on the real world. Your own hands often won’t make sense when you’re in a dream: it can appear scaly like that of a dragon, it can be transparent, it can be invisible – all sorts of crazy things so don’t freak out. It’s a good indicator that you’re inside a dream.
  • f. Mirror – Mirrors, the so-called gateway to the spirit world appear weird in dream too. Try looking into one and you will see what I mean. If you don’t see yourself in it, or you find yourself looking different then you maybe in dreamland.

What to do once you know you on a dream?

Most people would immediately wake up. It’s a defense mechanism, you’re in an unfamiliar territory and all those crazy things that could happen on a dream will just scare you and will immediately wake you up from that deep sleep. It’s just your mind doing its job. So how can we combat that?

  • a. Practice – Find sanctuary in a tempurpedic bed and do it several times. In your first few tries you will certainly wake up, especially if what you see in the tests above freaks you out. But you will certainly get a hang of it, and once you do, it will all be fun from that point.
  • b. Take Notes – Taking notes is an important aspect in controlling your dreams. Place a notebook and a pen, not electronic ones, the real old school paper and pen with real ink (or a pencil). We only remember half of what we dreamt after 5 minutes from waking up, so it’s important to take note, this will also allow you to clearly differentiate the feeling and elements of dreams and reality.
  • c. Repeat – Repeat lucid dreaming. This will allow you to lengthen the time you have lucid dreaming. Few seconds, few minutes – it all depends on you. Know that the longer you control your dream simply means longer fun.

What’s next? Do whatever you want.

Here are some of the things you could do when controlling your dreams:

  • a. Be superhero, mythical character, anyone – You probably heard that you could be anything, well in lucid dreams you can finally achieve that. You can play as superman (or at least have his powers and not his weakness) and beat evil forces etc.
  • b. Save the world – Fearing of (Zombie) Apocalypse now is your chance to prevent it or save the world from it.
  • c. Talk to anybody – Do you want to talk to Jesus, Einstein, Tupac or anybody in history? Remember this: it’s your dream, so it’s your game.
