7 Gym Etiquette Rules You Must Follow

by James

The gym is a place for channeling your motivation for change into something meaningful for your mind and body. It provides the necessary outlet and tools for crafting the physique you’ve always dreamed of. They’re not for everyone though. Some people are even turned off by the thought of visiting a gym altogether, but if attendees would be courteous and adhere to a set of proper gym etiquette, others would feel more welcome and comfortable in the gym atmosphere. Below are seven crucial rules all gym guests should adhere to.

1. Use A Towel

No one wants to be sprayed with a barrage of sweat while you sprint on the treadmill. Simply patting yourself down with a towel from time to time will result in a far more hygienic environment.

2. Wipe Down Equipment

Speaking of hygiene, it’s very important to sanitize your machines after use. No one wants to touch your germs and residual bodily fluids. Please be respectful and clean up after yourself.

3. Wear Proper Attire

One of the worst things to encounter at a gym is the unfortunate personal business of a man or woman’s most intimate area. If you’re going to be doing a lot of stretching, bending and wide limb movements, don’t wear something that’s going to ride up and show all your goodies. No one wants to see it, so please wear clothing that is appropriate. Make sure it fits and is in no danger of wardrobe malfunction.

4. Limit Loud Perfumes

Many people are allergic to the potency of perfume and body sprays. For people with respiratory issues, a cloud of dense cologne can manifest an eruption of sneezing, coughing and possibly even an asthma attack. When you’re exercising and are out of breath to begin with, this problem can be exacerbated even further. So for the welfare of those around you, be respectful and leave the perfumes in the bottle.

5. Read Directions

It’s a safety hazard to try using a machine without fully understanding how to operate it. You risk injuring yourself and others, so be sure to read directions and if in doubt, ask someone for help.

6. Limit Phone Conversations

When you’re at the gym you’re supposed to be giving it your all by making the most of your time and working up a sweat. If you have enough lung power and focus to be chatting it up with a friend, you’re probably not working hard enough, and are just wasting your time. Loudly gabbing on the phone can be distracting to others, so try to limit your phone use to emergencies only.

7. Always Return Weights

It sucks to have to re-rack someone else’s weights because they were to lazy to do so. Leaving weights lying around can also create a hazardous obstacle course for others. Just be courteous and return the items you were using.

Going to the gym can a very fun and rewarding experience. As long as you’re respectful and take responsibility for your actions, the gym should remain pleasant for all involved.
