Top 10 Removal Tips

We all know how moving can be a very stressful time in your life. That’s why this article is here. I have moved home 6 times in the past 6 years and three of those times were to a different country, so I know what I’m talking about!

Below, you will find my top 10 tips on moving.

1. Dedicate a calendar to your move

You should use either a calendar that you can put on the wall or a notebook. Make sure you use this calendar only for your move. You can write down dates anything from when contracts are about to exchange to when you need to start packing. So often, people forget they need to cancel their electric or gas or even to cancel the delivery of papers. So, make this calendar your best friend and keep it updated daily.

2. Make lists when you’re packing

The last thing you want is complete confusion on where you have packed your breakables and where you have packed your electrical items. Make sure you label each box with a number and where possible the name of the room. Add this to a notebook and write down what’s in the box. It’s also a good idea to get some tape that says “fragile” in big bold letters. Keep the notebook somewhere safe that no-one else has access to.

3. Make sure you know what your budget is

This is one thing that people often forget all about. Moving costs money and if you don’t keep an eye on how much you’re spending it might come back to bite you at a later date. Make sure you are clear on what solicitor’s fees you will have to pay, what the removal company will charge and how much it will cost to get you to your new home. Above all, do not overspend. If you can only afford a man with a van then make sure you do this.

4. When moving abroad

This is not impossible to do with the minimal of fuss however; it can get messy very quickly especially if you’re moving to a different time zone. Make sure you know dates and times of what’s happening in the country you’re in now and the country you’re moving to. It’s also a good idea to make sure you don’t end up arriving at your new home when there is a national holiday.

5. Be ruthless with packing

If you don’t use it, don’t take it this will just cost you more when you get quotes from a removal company.

6. If you’re packing yourself

Make sure you use proper boxes, especially if you’re moving a long distance. It’s worth spending a little bit extra (if your budget can stand it) so you have the proper materials to pack with. Use strong tape and DON’T overfill your boxes.

7. The Removal Company you use

Make sure you only use a reputable firm that can provide you with proof of insurance and can backup what they say with references. Get all of the quotes in writing and make sure there are not going to be any hidden costs.

8. Don’t say no to help

If your friends and family offer to help, don’t see it as charity this will help your stress levels and get the job done more quickly.

9. Just before you move

Tie up all the loose ends before you go.

10. STAY CALM

It will be OK!
