Choosing the Right Roofing for the Climate

The climate can greatly affect the way people live. It is the determining factor to a person’s wardrobe and hobbies. More importantly, this is the determining factor to what things could be used in a house. Building structures that do not withstand the climate is like building a sand castle. No matter how good it may look at first, it will eventually just collapse. Everything should be planned and picked according to the kind of weather in a place. All things from roofing to the kind of foundation to use are determined by the climate.

The roof needs special attention though. This is the part of the house that protects everything else. If it is not properly installed, it would cause problems like leaks. If the wrong material is used, people would also suffer from the weather conditions. Choosing the appropriate material for a particular climate will save inhabitants of the headache.

A popular material is the shingle which is used everywhere. This could be installed without any big problem. However, it can be easily blown by strong winds. Places that experience a lot of coastal storms are likely to have lose shingles every now and then. The problem is that it is difficult to find replacements that would look exactly like the old ones. Also, the extreme sunlight would cause the color to fade.

Roofing for the Climate

  • Composite shingles may serve as an alternative to other materials. These are durable, attractive and does not fade too fast under the sun. Unlike wood shakes, there is no moisture therefore it does not rot. Also, it is not too heavy compared to slate. This is pretty much useful in most climates.
  • Others who want to have protection against all weather condition could consider the tiles. This is ideal to use in places with minimal snowfall. It may break easily with big hails pouring. Also it is heavy and the combined weight of the snow could be detrimental to the property’s foundation.
  • Wood shakes on the other hand look good. These are most ideal to climates which are mostly sunny. It needs a lot of maintenance and would easily rot in a damp environment. It would not be suitable to places where it may be perpetually raining. Doing such would mean wasting money.
  • The slate is similar to the tiles. It is also durable and could stand whatever the weather condition. However, people should think twice about using it. This is a very heavy material that the roof frame might just break because of it.
  • Metal is a modern material. Galvanized iron sheets have become increasingly popular since these are also very durable. It is light and does not endanger the foundation of the house. Apart from that, it could fair well with whatever weather condition. However, it may need some maintenance as it could rust as well.
